ISLE OF ANGLESEY BOAT
FESTIVAL OCTOBER 2002
The first ever Isle of Anglesey Charter
Boat open took place over the weekend of
12th & 13th October 2002. Fished at
anchor over two days, the main quarry was
whiting and dogfish, with occasional dabs,
codling, pouting and huss.
In all 95 anglers took part in the event
aboard 12 of North Wales' finest Charter
boats.
Day one saw a strong North Westerly blow
delay the start from 0700 until 1300hrs.
Furthermore owing to the blustery wind,
the venue was moved from the waters off
Moelfre to Bull bay at Amlwch and the fishing
time reduced from 6 to 4hrs. Fishing was
scratchy, with whiting, dogs and dabs the
main species caught.
Once the results had been tallied, Saturday's
competition saw 14 anglers tying on 100%,
with Lancashire fireman Kevin Preston leading
the pack on a fish count back of 60.
Day two saw all 12 boats fish in relative
close proximity to one another, a couple
miles off Moelfre, the festivals main fishing
grounds. With a full 6hrs fishing planned,
some of the anglers were in for a shock
as to the sheer volume of fish available
to them, with whiting and dogfish once again
the main target specie. Scottish International
Gordon Lyall took the most fish on day two
with 172 being recorded for his score.
Once day one and day two scores had been
added together, 4 anglers tied on the maximum
200%, however following a fish count back.
Kevin Preston remained in front, and took
the £700 first prize from Gordon Lyall
with a score of 217 fish to 206.
Third place went to another Scottish International,
Rob Reaich with 195 fish. Wales' Colin Orme
Thomas in fourth with 173 fish.
